Heroes of Might and Magic V Preview

Anticipating the release of the Heroes of Might and Magic V has had me excited for quite a while. Now I'm ready to preview it for you.

First and foremost, I must admit that of the turn-based strategy games of this ilk, I've always preferred Age of Wonders. I'm not sure why but the game always appealed to me more. Now that there doesn't seem to be a sequel in the works, I'm getting back into HoMM. This latest game seems to be on almost on par with the best in the series, with just a few reservations.

The new 3D graphics are really nice, but very superfluous. The game wouldn't change much if they had stuck to their sprite-based roots. The battles are smooth and easy to manage. Using your units to their advantage is the only way to go if you want to win.

While I said that the 3D graphics were unnecessary, they do make the game easy to look at. If you've got to be in battle as often as this game requires, it behooves the developer to make it as appealing as possible. In that aspect they've succeeded.

So far, so good for the latest entry into the HoMM line of games. Hopefully this game can get back the series' good name, but only time will tell.

* This has been updated to reflect that I was stupidly referring to it as Heroes of Might and Magic IV, rather then V. Sorry for the confusion.
