Madden NFL 08
Could be better
Madden NFL 07 was on e-AAGH.net's Top 5 games of 2007, and
I think it was a well-deserved honor. Madden 08, however, will likely not be
afforded such a luxury. It's not that it's worse then last year, it's just that,
well, it's almost the exact same game as last year. The menu's have been tweaked
(some for the better, some for worse), and there are a few new goodies hidden
here and there, but other then that, this is Madden 07 2.0.
Let's start with the obvious: this is a last-gen offering.
EA has still not ported the Xbox 360 or PS3 model to the PC for reasons that
I imagine involve money. If that's not bad enough, it doesn't even feature all
of the PS2/Xbox options. No Fantasy Football mode for PC gamers, so if that's
why you were going to buy this version, stop now. By the way, even though it
doesn't have the Fantasy Football mode, it does feature the Supreme League teams
(the Dummies, Glaciers, Tridents and Deceivers) as playable teams. Don't ask me
why. There's a knock-off Ring of the Champion feature, but it's so lackluster
that I just can't be bothered to care about it.
The game sounds just like last year, and obviously the
graphics have had almost no improvements. I was hoping for at least some
Anti-Aliasing/Anisotropic Filtering options to smooth the game's rough edges,
but it wasn't to be. The players still look rather cartoony compared to the
360/PS3 version, and show little in the way of textural detail. The fields
are not torn up during play, uniforms show only very mild effects from playing
in inclimate weather, and there's an inexcusable amount of sideline pop-in. On
the positive side, the scoreboards - which previously only showed a static
picture, now play a video of the game. Unfortunately, it's a video of whatever
view you have, but that's not a distraction. A small, but nice, touch is that
when the camera is showing cut-scenes or players between plays on a rainy day,
you'll get raindrops on the screen. It's a nice detail that you wouldn't miss,
but appreciate once it's there.
